My Favourite Vegetarian Restaurants in Montreal

by Jason July 29, 2016
written by Jason

Sometimes I eat vegetables. There I said it. Jokes aside, I enjoy eating healthy. Not only out of necessity (science stipulates certain affects pounding down cheeseburgers and poutines has on the body), but out of choice. As much as I love BBQ, burritos, pizza as the next person, I can’t help but crave something lighter when it’s 40 degrees plus humidity in the butt-crack of summer. It’s common that when the mercury rises, your appetite dwindles. So if you’re looking for a place for a light but substantial meal, here is a list of vegetarian and vegan restaurants to get you through the summer (and beyond)!

Tacos and Ceviche in The Mile-End – Socialito

by Jason July 27, 2016
written by Jason

There used to be a time when if you wanted tacos, there were only a few Mexican joints in town to get your fix. The type of places that treat you to a watered down margarita and sombrero on your birthday. Places that featured hokey pseudo pueblo murals painted on the walls. Fortunately for us, Montreal has experienced a literal taco boom in recent years. The best part is that these palces are located right across the city representing each neighbourhood as though in preparation for some delicious taco Hunger Game… which coincidentally is every Tuesday when I see that damn #tacotuesday hashtag on Instagram. I recently checked out one of the newest taquerias in town, Socialito in the Mile-End.

Montreal Just got Cheesier – Macbar et Fromage

by Jason July 14, 2016
written by Jason

Everyday when I wake up, I get down on my hands and knees and thank the powers that be that I can eat dairy. Can you imagine a life without ice cream, pizza, poutine or cheeseburgers? I can guarantee that I’d be a lot more unpleasant to be around. I would be way more crankier than I already am if I couldn’t eat some of my favourite foods. Near the top of that list of favourite foods is mac and cheese. I recently checked out this new spot in The Village called Macbar et Fromage that will guarantee to scare the lactose intolerance out of you.

Grilled Potato Salad with Montreal Style Smoked Meat Wieners – Recipe

by Jason July 11, 2016
written by Jason

Summer is synonymous with barbecues and other ultra casual outdoor gatherings. If you’re lucky, an affair where your dining experience consists of damp swimsuits and forced exposure to manky man-feet squeezed into flip-flops that have seen many a pool parties over the years. But this is a small price to pay to enjoy the company of loved ones over delicious food. Grilled burgers and hot dogs are great, but what’s a barbecue without a great potato salad? Use this recipe for your next barbecue or pot luck that’s sure to be a hit with everyone!

Local Jerk Serves West Indian Food in the Plateau

by Jason June 30, 2016
written by Jason

I love eating hot and spicy foods. But what’s even better is eating hot and spicy foods in the summer. In the thick of summer, there’s something to be said about eating foods that make you sweat like a 16 year old when someone asks to use their bedroom computer. Hot and sweltering weather paired with a frosty glass of something fizzy, inhaling a plate that hopefully was cooked by fire… the best. Word got to me that there was a new Caribbean place in the Plateau that I had to check out. So I hit up the newest and hottest jerk shack east of The Main, Local Jerk.

Baton Rouge Grand Opening and Iron Chef Battle

by Jason June 24, 2016
written by Jason

I believe I can speak for everyone when I say that we’ve all celebrated something at a Baton Rouge restaurant at one point in our lives. A birthday, Mother’s or Father’s day, any occasion that was an excuse to dine out in a group, we’ve all done so at a Baton Rouge. I remember, back in the day, it was a favourite go-to spot for many reasons. The place was casual, affordable, and the food was always delicious and consistent. Founded in Montreal in 1992, Baton Rouge now has 31 restaurants across Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia and they recently opened their new location at Place Ste-Foy (at 2450 Laurier Boulevard) in Quebec City. I was invited to the grand opening festivities as well as to guest judge their inaugural Iron Chef BR competition!

90 seconds to Pizza – Pizzeria no.900

by Jason June 20, 2016
written by Jason

One of the things I love about writing restaurant reviews are the unsolicited restaurant recommendations I get. Doing what I do, I’m always on the lookout for new restaurants that either appear practically overnight on the restaurant radar or finally getting the opportunity to check out a spot that has been buzzing for a while. So naturally when I’m approached with a “hey, have you checked out that new place…” or “I just had the best… at…” I’m taking notes. Recently, the proliferation of pizza shops around town have definitely upped the city’s pizza game by offering pies that run the gamut of styles. From rustic Neapolitan style pizza to Roman al taglio slabs or even Montreal-style grease-wheels with smoked meat and bacon, we’ve got them all. I recently checked out this new pizza spot in Outremont that has been spoken highly of by a lot of people around me, Pizzeria No.900.

Poke in Montreal – Le Poké Bar

by Jason June 9, 2016
written by Jason

I recently hit up Le Poke Bar on Crescent to try out the hottest food trend in United States that has finally arrived on the shores of Montreal; Poke (pronounced Puh-KAY… or Poké ici à Québec.) Poke is a fantastic dish of lightly marinated fish or seafood that’s native to Hawaii. I can paint you a picture of grabbing a container full of fresh poke from the closest beachside food store, copping a squat on a sandy beach along the turquoise shores of the Big Island, enjoying fresh line-caught big eye tuna while having the sweet dewy mist caress your face from the crashing waves. Unfortunately, our Montreal Poke scene isn’t as romantic. But if you concentrate hard enough and squint just right, the sounds of the street sweeper knocking down orange traffic cones and hold your breath as speeding cars splash puddles of random street juice onto your pants… it’s like you’re almost there.

Petite Maison – The Little House of Danny St Pierre

by Jason June 3, 2016
written by Jason

Before I start my review; here’s the link to make your reservations NOW. I dine out very often and I’m blessed to live in a city where we have such a vast variety of restaurants at our disposal. It goes without saying that not every dining experience is going to be a great one, and unfortunately I’ve hit a rough patch in the past little while where a lot of my meals were less than stellar. However, I recently hit up a spot in the Mile-End for brunch that reinvigorated my passion for finding great restaurants – Danny St Pierre’s Petite Maison.

Barbecue That Rubs You the Right Way – Rubs American BBQ

by Jason May 27, 2016
written by Jason

I’m making my way across the city eating at every barbecue joint in town. Why? Why not? I can never get enough of that tender meat nursed for hours laced with the most delicious smokey blue carcinogens. Barbecue is an art and an underrated one at that. Not to be confused with grilling – cooking over an open flame – basically what you make your dad do on father’s day because you’re un ungrateful child. True barbecue is also known as smoking or pit-smoking. This process infuses and tenderizes the meat you’re cooking with smoke that comes from word-fire heat. It’s a passion of mine and I get excited knowing that there are places around the city specializing in it. I hit up the recently reopened Le Fumoir Rubs Smokehouse on Prince Arthur street.

About Me

About Me

People get hungry and need to find good places to eat... I am people, and here are the places I've found. This is a log of my endeavors set forth to discover the hidden gems of the city I call home, Montreal. I vow to not leave one hot pot lid unturned, snail shell hollowed, or souvlaki foil emptied until I can safely say that I ate my way across Montreal. It's a big claim, but it's one I'm making.
