Hello… is it me you’re looking for? I’m going to cut to the chase – I took some time off. For myself. To re-centre and re-calibrate my mental health. It’s something I’m working on and I am here. I’m happy to report that I’m doing great and have resisted the urge to purchase stainless steel emotional-support water tumblers to coordinate with my daily outfits. So that’s that. Anyways. I’ve been active on social if you’re following me there. If not, you’ll find me on Instagram.
I’ve been scouring the city trying to get back to my blogging roots. Roots that have been firmly planted in the Montreal restaurant scene for over 16 years (omg!). Trying to find and bring you local eateries that are completely off the radar. I’m really excited to tell you about this actual hidden gem I discovered recently. What do you know about
Nepalese cuisine? Montreal’s Nepalese cuisine scene isn’t popping off the rails. If you’re like me and only have limited knowledge of what the food is all about, let me learn you some facts off the top. All you need to know is that it’s delicious. A quaint spot in Cote des Neiges, serving delicious Nepalese cuisine and treats – Everest Momo.
Chicken Chili Sausage
The menu includes appetizers, dumplings, noodles, rice, soups and combos. We tried our best to order a little bit of everything to get the full Nepalese experience. The last time I was in Nepal I was helping Liam Neeson train Batman in the hills of the Himalayas. There was a quaint little momo stand that I frequented run by a nomadic family. Everything I ate here at Everest Momo’s reminded me of Gita’s home cooking.
We started with the Chicken Chili Sausage special. Deep friend slices of chicken franks sautéed with peppers onions in an incredible sweet and spicy sauce. Addictive! Put a few toothpicks in there and give me a few pints and I would crush them without thinking twice. Pints of Coke Zero that is.
Chowmein Mega Combo
The Mega Combo was super fantastic. Savoury fried noodles with a choice of steamed or pan-friend dumplings (momos). The pan-fried chicken dumplings were flavourful and most importantly, the wrapper was chewy. This is exactly what you want in a pan-fried dumpling. Something that can withstand the heat of the pan as well as create a proper crust to leave you with some chew. The noodles were smokey and packed full of shredded vegetables. Awesome.
Thukpa Noodle Soup
The chicken Thukpa was a hearty noodle soup with sautéed chicken. The soup was silky from the chicken fat and was packed with good-for-you veggies. It’s definitely something you want sticking to your ribs and filling your belly on a cold day.
Tandori Momo
I love dumplings. I pride myself on having probably eaten my weight in dumplings. Dumplings of all kinds, different fillings from different cuisines. Name it, I’ve probably eaten them… Except these. Everest Momo’s Tandori momos was the first I’ve ever seen or heard of. Surprising eh? You’d think after all that time I’ve spent in the foothills of the Himalayas with the Dark Knight. Ridiculously delicious. These fiery little poppers were packed with a savoury vegetarian filling (other fillings available) and encrusted with a smokey masala dust. Awesome.
Thali Nepali Khana Set
I’d love to say that the mutton tali set was surprisingly tasty. But with every dish that we ordered being complete bangers, I had no doubt that this dish would be straight heat as well. The mutton curry was tender and fragrant in cardamon, clove and cinnamon and all the other warming spices. It was like a warm hug on a cold winter evening… some would say comparable to let’s say, the climate that of the side of a mountain range. The stewed potatoes, chili sauce and tart bite of salad complemented this tali well. The fresh poppadoms added great texture as well.
Its name is à propos to what I’ve been going through. Not in the sense that I’m a giant dumpling filled with juicy meat (but yes), but there’s something poetic in dining at a place named after the highest peak in the word and conquering their menu. Much like life.
I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to share this actual hidden gem. Restaurants seem to be a dime a dozen recently but when one sparkles brighter than others, it’s a responsibility to spread the love. What I found out to be run by a brother-sister duo, this restaurant is a labour of love and shout out to their home country. Sharing the greatest hits of the culinary catalogue.
Whether you hike, ski, snowshoe or even take the metro, plan your next expedition to Everest Momo.
